How It Started

Hi. I'm Marie, Belle's mom. I started getting relaxers at such a young age that I didn't remember a time in my younger life when my hair wasn’t straight. Due to concerns over the chemicals in relaxers, I decided to stop straightening my hair a couple of years before I was pregnant with my daughter. When I discovered my natural texture, the honest truth is, I didn’t like it. I had been conditioned by society to see my natural hair as the least desirable texture. I didn’t know how to take care of it or style it, and the result was I didn’t like how I looked with my hair in its natural state.

Then, I had my daughter, and everything changed. In the hospital bed, holding her, I remember looking at her hair and thinking, "Oh no, she has hair like me." But just as quickly, another thought came: "There is nothing wrong with my daughter. She is beautiful just the way God made her, from the ends of her hair strands to the tips of her toes."

From that moment, I knew I didn’t want my daughter to feel any negative feelings about any part of herself. I became determined to teach her to love her natural hair. My intention grew into an obsession to nurture her and her hair, so she wouldn’t face the same struggles or feelings I did when I first discovered my true texture.

By the time she was three, I decided to take to social media and display the beauty of our texture. I wanted her to have an online community she could look back on if she ever questioned the beauty of her hair. Beautiful things have happened since then. I’ve learned to love my whole self, and we’ve met so many wonderful families who support us. Most importantly, I can say that teaching my daughter to love her natural hair has become a MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

My goal now is to share what I’ve learned over these past few years to keep my daughter’s hair healthy and thriving. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you Curl Companions as we travel this path!!
